This was then followed by general body meeting at 6pm. As you know, main agenda of general body meeting was the WAPI’s annual election for its executive body. General body meeting started with welcome remarks and annual report by president who provided WAPI’s progress to the date from the year it was founded. Then election for 2008-executive officers was carried out by election officer, Dr Jyotsana Walia, with following persons being elected unanimously by general body.

1.    President...........Dr Sanjiv Parikh

2.    Vice President......Dr Neeti Mittal

3.    Secretary...........Dr Sundar Samavedi

4.    Treasurer...........Dr Arti Tayade

This was then followed by brief introductory speech by president-elect, Dr Sanjiv Parikh who also introduced Dr V. Mohan as a speaker for “IBS Talk’ and Novartis Pharmaceutical Inc as a sponsor for this talk and dinner. Then Secretary, Dr Raj Patel, carried out an open survey about members’ approval rating for this meeting place and food. We also had brief time for open forum but no significant issues were noted or reported. Meeting then adjourned at 7.15pm to allow Dr V. Mohan to start his presentation for GI talk on Irritable Bowel Syndrome. This presentation by Dr Mohan was excellent and enjoyed very well by all, followed by warm & delicious dinner served by Raj Palace Restaurant.

** Dr Raj Patel’s nomination for vice president was initially approved by governing body based on eligibility criteria as established per by-laws section 6.10 (c)(2). But then Dr Raj Patel withdrew in favor of Dr Neeti Mittal just before the election begun. And Dr Neeti Mittal was approved unanimously by general body for the position of vice president. So governing body approved retroactively this change in nomination, to be consistent with what general body has approved, as requested by president.

Few from governing body noted and brought to my attention that last minute change in nomination may not be consistent with our procedures & bylaws. We all know that nominee for the executive officer position has to be someone who has served on the Governing Body for at least 1 year according to our by-laws section 6.10 (c)(2), and nomination should have been approved by governing body that has been responsible to carry out the functions of nomination committee (see by-laws section 6.10) But our organization being a young organization sometimes we find it difficult to fill all these positions with people who can meet eligibility criteria per by-laws section 6.10 (c)(2). So one time exception is being made to retroactively accept and approve (by governing body)this last minute change in nomination based on last minute voluntary withdrawal of Dr Raj Patel for this vice presidential nomination. I hope this provides adequate explanation as to what happened.

We apologize for this oversight. We would like to assure you that there was no intentional omission of the By-Laws nor there was intentional deviation from normal procedures. This announcement is for your information as to what has happened.

Respectfully Yours,

Dhiren N. Ajudia
